Work on the Cleuson-Dixence project in Switzerland is proceeding and the new power plant at Bieudron will be opened on schedule, the owner reports.
The project, in Switzerland, is distinguished by having the highest head of any hydroelectric project yet constructed. The head is 1883m (see articles beginning p16).
According to project manager Cleuson-Dixence Engineers (EOS) the civil works for the 15.8km head race tunnel and the 4.3km steel lined shaft were completed in April. Beginning on 8 May total adduction was gradually set in operation. Pressure tests followed immediately on the head race tunnel and the steel-lined shaft.
In the head race tunnel the internal water pressure will slowly increase to the maximum nominal value of 20bar along with the seasonal filling of the Grande Dixence reservoir in September. The general behaviour of the structure is said to be satisfactory. After successful dynamic tests, unit three is expected to be connected to the grid, in operation, by August.
