A team of hydro power experts from China are to carry out a comprehensive assessment of rehabilitation needs at the 64MW Mount Coffee hydro plant in Liberia.

The team will include five experts from the largest electricity company in the PRC. The Mt Coffee plant was constructed during the 1960s with the first two units being commissioned in 1966 and the second two units in 1974.

The run-of-river plant had been completely destroyed during the various civil conflicts. In 1990 the intake dam was breached at one end by water flow when the spillway gates were left closed during one incident and a significant part of the dam wall was destroyed in the process. In subsequent years the internal plant was completely destroyed leaving only the building, which is intact.
