Work at the Mambilla project commenced with the signing of contract agreements, nearly 20 years after the project was initially proposed, reported The Guardian Nigeria.

Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project had consistently encountered delays after the initiation of feasibility studies in the early 1980’s.

The Federal Government signed arrangements with EXIM Bank of China to provide 75% costs of the project cost while the ministry of power will offer $309m.

Planned capacity of the project was also reviewed to 3, 050MW from the earlier envisaged 2,600MW.

Revenues from the plant are expected to repay the loan obtained for the project and the plant is now Nigeria’s largest single power project.

The project is expected to be complete within the next five to six years.
