A consortium of six Korean companies including Korea Electric Power, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Lotte Engineering & Construction, Posco Engineering & Construction, SK Engineering & Construction, and Daewoo Engineering has also prequalified for the $2.3bn contract to construct the Ituango hydroelectric power station.

China Three Gorges and the Korean consortium are among seven groups, which have prequalified to bid for the project. Among the prequalified companies, four are Brazilian and the fifth is Empresas Publicas de Medellin of Colombia.

According to the Colombia Investment Promotion Office (CIPO), the first phase of the power station, which is planned for the mouth of the Ituango river, is expected to be delivered by 2018. The winner of the bid will get a 20-25 year concession to build, own and operate the power plant.
