The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) has signed an agreement with Brazilian energy company Electrobras that will see its ultra-high voltage (UHV) electricity transmission technologies used at the Belo Monte Dam project in the Amazon region.

According to reports in the Global Times, SGCC’s technologies will be used to transmit electricity produced at the 11.2GW project over 2000km away to regions in the south and southeast of Brazil.

The $17B Belo Monte project is being built on the Xingu river in the state of Para. The project has faced fierce opposition from environmental groups concerned about negative impacts on the ecosystem and wildlife in the region
