The contract includes the delivery of solar energy systems, energy efficiency measures and improve lighting components to the school district.
The 30-year project, which is estimated to save the district more than $40m, includes 1.7MW of solar generation capacity at seven district sites, upgraded HVAC systems, irrigation controls and energy-efficient LED lights.
Lucia Mar superintendent Jim Hogeboom said that the district has been facing increasing energy costs, which led it to look carefully at its energy efficiency as well as the potential to produce its own energy with solar.
"We believe this project will allow us to fulfill three critical goals – financial, environmental and educational," Hogeboom added.
Construction work on the project will start in January 2014 with an expectation to reduce the district’s utility-purchased electricity costs by around 75%.
