Czech Republic-based utility CEZ has entered the tender process launched by Romania's state-owned energy company Termoelectrica to become a strategic partner in the present plant modernization project and the potential construction of new resources in the locality.

CEZ has submitted documents to Termoelectrica, which operates thermal power plants in Romania, confirming its fulfillment of entry conditions for the tender under its pre-qualifying round and expressed an interest in the project.

The installed capacity of the plant that will be modernized reaches 535MW. The plant is owned by Termoelectrica’s 100%-owned subsidiary SC Electrocentrale Galati.

CEZ has also expressed its interest in the strategic partnership in a new resource construction project in Borzesti, Romania.

CEZ has been operating in Romania since 2005, when it acquired distribution company Electrica Oltenia, which was subsequently unbundled. The retail unit, CEZ Vanzare, was detached and the name of Electrica Oltenia was changed to CEZ Distributie. This company will only be engaged in regulated electricity distribution.
