The company’s proposed plans come despite dry weather that forced it to suspend certain operations at of its mine in order to keep dust particulate levels within legal limits.
Cerrejon president Roberto Junguito was quoted by Reuters as saying, "We’re convinced that despite the difficult situation we’re going through in La Guajira, especially with the drought, we’ll be able to contribute to the country with production and exports above what we had in 2013."
Junguito expects the operations at the mine to speed up from September or October.
In 2013, El Cerrejon coal mine produced 33 million tons and exported 33.5 million tons.
Cerrejon operates an open pit mine and transport system comprising 150km railway and a port with 180,000 ton per year capacity. The company has a workforce of 10,000.
