Cemex has announced it is to supply cement for the construction of a new tidal barrage and hydroelectric power plant on the Nile River in Eqypt that is expected to have a 32MW capacity and improve irrigation to a landmass of about 1.6 million acres.

The project, funded by the Egyptian government, is expected to improve navigation in the Nile and provide water and renewable energy to the five neighboring cities of Assiut, Minya, Beni Suif, Fayoum, and Giza. It is also expected to generate 6,000 direct and indirect jobs during the entire span of its construction.

Expected to reach completion in 2017, the project includes a sluiceway with eight 17m wide radial gates, a hydroelectric plant with four 8MW turbine generators, a double-chamber ship, and an 11m tall embankment dam.

As part of the project a section of the Nile River will be deepened in order to mitigate any potential rise in water levels in the city of Assiut and neighboring areas. Cemex says it is collaborating very closely with the project contractor in intensive technical tests to select the optimum cement mix composition required for the project.
