Recently, DOE issued a FOA, which is specific for spurring research and investments in technologies to mitigate CO2 emissions. Accoridng to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, this FOA is allocating $100m for innovative concepts for beneficial use of carbon dioxide, such as CO2 to fuel technologies that are beyond conventional underground carbon sequestration concepts. The DOE plans to notify applicants selected for awards in September 2009.
Byron Elton, chief executive officer of Carbon Sciences, said: “Our CO2-to-Fuel technology offers a compelling alternative to carbon sequestration and the DOE recognizes and acknowledges that there are other innovative and viable approaches to reducing carbon emissions that deserve government funding.
“Congressional interest in beneficial reuse of CO2 is high. The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development recently held a hearing on ‘Beneficial Reuse of Carbon Dioxide From Coal and Other Fossil Fuels’ during which DOE representatives emphasized that significant investments in the carbon recycling sector will generate important environmental and economic benefits.”
