The Genesee power facility is situated in Genesee approximately 50 miles southwest of Edmonton. The total capacity of the plant is 1,218MW.
The Genesee plant comprises three units – Unit 1 that commenced operations in 1994 with a power generation capacity of 384MW, Unit 2 that commenced operations in 1989 with a power generation capacity of 384MW and Unit 3 with a power generation capacity of 450MW – commenced operations in 2005.
Units 1 and 2 are completely owned by Capital Power, which operates the power plants for its owners. Unit 3, which uses supercritical combustion technology, is jointly owned by Capital Power and TransAlta.
Edmonton’s EPCOR’s majority owned Capital Power owns approximately 3,300MW of power generation capacity and also markets energy commodities.
Alberta-based TransAlta engages in the ownership and operation of approximately 9,000MW of power generating capacity and markets energy commodities in the US, Mexico, Australia and Canada.
