The rooftop PV installation on the alpincenter will provide the center with self-produced solar power besides helpfing offset energy costs and reducing the power required to operate the cooling system.
Hamburg-Wittenburg, featuring 30,000 m² of ski slopes, can operate the facility throughout the year using only the self-generated power.
Canadian Solar chairman and CEO Dr. Shawn Qu said that such projects are the future of solar energy, where PV systems can cover the facility’s complete energy demand and eliminate dependence on public subsidies.
"It is a particular proof of photovoltaic efficiency that a winter sports center – which needs great amounts of energy – uses solar power," Qu added.
Germany-based Dr. Metje Consulting was the planning and implementation contractor for the project.
