Enmax Corporation and Capital Power Corporation say that the Shepard Energy Centre – Alberta’s largest natural gas-fuelled power generating facility – is fully operational.
The 800 MW combined cycle plant is an important step in Alberta’s plan to transition away from coal-fired generation. Construction at the site, in the Shepard industrial district of east Calgary, began in 2011.
The plant was built by a partnership of Kiewit Energy Canada and Black & Veatch, with Mitsubishi supplying the plant’s two gas turbines, steam turbine and associated generators.
Capital Power bought a 50 per cent stake in the project in late 2012. "We look forward to continuing to work with Enmax to deliver Genesee 4 & 5, Alberta’s next large natural gas-fuelled generation facility near the end of the decade," said Capital Power president and CEO Brian Vaasjo.
