The merger between Pacific Enterprises, parent of Southern California Gas and Enova Corp, owner of San Diego Gas and Electric, received approval from the US Federal Securities and Exchange Commission. The $6.2 billion merger will create a utility with 6 million customers.

The new company will be Sempra Energy, and will be based in San Diego. The two companies have already cooperated in joint ventures.

The merger was approved in March by the California Public Utilities Commission, provided that the two companies divest some operations to maintain fair competition in the deregulated market.
