This funding is expected to accelerate Wrightspeed’s manufacturing of its Route retrofit powertrain for the large medium duty commercial fleet market.

Route retrofit includes a range-extending generator, geared traction drive and High-power plug-in battery system with active cooling, all working in tandem to allow fuel savings and thereby helps promote energy efficiency.

Wrightspeed earlier received $1.2m from CEC and has been successful in raising $10m as private equity in 2010 and 2011.

Besides the $5.79 funding to Wrightspeed, the CEC also handed out about $1.8m to Zero Motorcycles, $10m to Tesla Motors; and about $2.2m to Quallion LLC as part of the same program.
