The offshore well has not yet reached target depth and the company said that the recent find is an indicative of an active hydrocarbon system.
The company is drilling first two exploration wells in the Baffin Bay Basin and plans to drill two more before the end of October 2010.
Cairn Energy chief executive Bill Gammell said that the company has early indications of a working hydrocarbon system with its first well in Greenland.
