Byerwen Coal mine is a joint venture of QCoal and Japanese firm JFE Steel. It is expected to supply up to 10 million tons of coking and thermal coal a year to Asian steel mills.

The project would create around 350 jobs during construction and up to 545 jobs on reaching full production.

The latest approval is subject to 22 strict environmental conditions, reported ABC News.

In July, the independent Coordinator General of Queensland approved the coal project.

Before commencing construction activities, the mine is subject to the receipt of mining lease approval from the Queensland government.
