Earlier this year, the Bulgarian government had forsaken a 2,000MW nuclear project in the town of Belene, citing lack of Western investors as reason, according to The Moscow Times.
Atomstroiexport, a Russian company which had a contract to build the plant, has demanded €1bn in compensation for the cancellation last month.
However, the opposition Socialists demanded a referendum to challenge the decision to drop the project. On 24 October, parliament voted 106-7 in favor of a referendum.
Another 2,000MW nuclear plant on the Danube River in the town of Kozloduy is already operational and it provides cheap electricity to Bulgarians.
Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant is a subsidiary of Bulgarian Energy Holding and two pressurized water reactors of the plant are currently managed by Kozloduy NPP.
