Along with its institutional partners, Brookfield has completed a previously announced acquisition of the hydroelectric portfolio from Alcoa
The projects include four generating stations on the Little Tennessee river located in eastern Tennessee and Cheoah River in western North Carolina.
Tennessee Valley Authority is recipient of all output from the facilities, which the firm has contracted through June 2014.
In 2005, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted a 40 year operating license to the portfolio that demonstrates the lowest operating costs in the region.
The acquisition expands Brookfield Renewable’s hydroelectric portfolio, which totals 5,000MW of installed capacity.
These projects are spread across 69 river systems and 11 power markets in the US, Canada and Brazil, providing enough renewable electricity to annually power two million homes.
