UK-based nuclear energy producer British Energy has welcomed the UK government's announcement that nuclear power will play a key role in its energy policy.

The government stated that nuclear power should have a role in the UK’s future energy mix and welcomed energy companies to bring forward plans to build new nuclear power stations.

British Energy said that it is already taking steps to ensure that the company is well positioned to be at the core of the new build program. The company claims that it has established a dedicated team that has expertise in consenting, nuclear licensing, design, construction and operation of nuclear stations in the UK and worldwide.

British Energy owns eight sites next to existing licensed nuclear facilities that reportedly rank amongst the best potential candidates for the construction of new nuclear power stations. The company is currently undertaking detailed assessments of its sites.

Bill Coley, CEO of the British Energy Group, said: The government’s decision is good news for the people of the UK today, and for future generations. A balanced energy policy of energy conservation, energy efficiency, and new electricity generation from clean fossil fuels, renewables, and nuclear power can provide reliable, affordable electricity to meet both our energy security and climate change goals.
