Energy major BP has decided to implement stricter controls for the oil product barges that it operates in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp oil hub and the Rhine River route, according to Reuters, which cited a company spokesman.

Reuters reported that BP will be using 600 deadweight tonne or above barges with less than 35 years of service, to increase security and reduce the probability of accidents.

The company spokesman said that BP plans to reduce the maximum service age limit to 30 years by 2010, according to Reuters.
