
The project will increase the recovery of oil and natural gas in the one of the three main reservoirs of the field by 65 million additional barrels.
It is part of the company’s investment in its existing deepwater Gulf of Mexico production hubs to boost output, as it looks to increase production by about 800,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day between 2015 and 2020, from its global operations.
As part of the project, the company overhauled the topsides and subsea equipment of the platform as well as drilling two water-injection wells at the site.
BP will inject water into the reservoir to boost pressure to increase production from the Thunder Horse project.
BP’s Gulf of Mexico business regional president Richard Morrison said: "This project will help BP sustain high levels of oil production in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico for years to come.
"And it’s another example of BP taking advantage of targeted and cost-effective opportunities within our existing portfolio."
Thunder Horse platform is located at a water depth of 6,050 feet, at about 150 miles southeast of New Orleans, in the Mississippi Canyon.
Started operations in 2008, Thunder Horse platform handle 250,000 barrels of oil and 200 million cubic feet per day of natural gas.
BP operates and has a 75% interest in the Thunder Horse project while Exxon Mobil holds the remaining 25% stake.
