BP plans to cut non-operations staff, including those in the back-office departments.

The Sunday Times cited BP finance director Brian Gilvary as saying: "What you’ll see with this simplification plan is that headcounts are starting to come down across all of our activities in upstream, downstream and in the corporate centres – essentially the layers above operations."

BP spokesman Robert Wine said: "We have sold about a third of the business but we are still set up for being that bigger company that we used to be."

Wine said the company would potentially reduce staff at head office and back office but not at the front line operations.

BBC quoted a BP spokesman as saying: "The fall in oil prices has added to the importance of making the organisation more efficient."
