UK-based multinational oil and gas company BP has completed the construction of two new units and the upgrade of hydrocracker heaters at its Cherry Point refinery in US.

The Cherry Point refinery located in northwest Washington, US has a capacity to process 230,000 barrels of crude oil and produce jet fuel, gasoline, diesel butane, and propane.

BP undertook the ‘Clean Diesel Project’ in May 2011 to meet the stringent air quality regulations in the country, reported Dow Jones Newswires.

The new units and upgrade work at the refinery will produce ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel that is expected to address or exceed federally mandated on-road diesel specifications.

The company submitted a filing to the Northwest Clean Air Agency on 26 April, stating that the new hydrogen production unit and new diesel hydrodesulfurization unit has begun operations.

BP’s Clean Diesel Project was completed at a cost of $85m.
