Royal Boskalis Westminster (Boskalis) has secured the balance of plant contract in the 92.4MW Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm, also known as the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre in Scotland.

In June this year, it was announced that Boskalis was the preferred contractor the project. The contract is worth more than €100m ($109m).

The offshore wind farm will be located 3 km off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland. The scope of the contract for Boskalis includes design, procurement, fabrication, supply, transportation and installation of eleven suction bucket jacket foundations and scour protection,

The procurement, supply, transportation and installation of 66kV Inter array and export cables will be done by the subsidiary of Boskalis, VBMS and the provision of wind turbine transportation and installation vessel.

Boskalis claims that the use of suction bucket jacket foundations in conjunction with large wind turbines and the use of high capacity 66kV power cables make this a unique project.

Construction of the project has been scheduled in September 2017. Foundations and the necessary cables for the project will be installed using Boskalis’ own assets including fallpipe vessel, transport barges, large floating sheerleg crane and cable laying vessel.

The company will also supply the wind turbine installation vessel and will install the wind turbines by itself. The project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2018.

Aberdeen Offshore Wind Project faced legal battle between the Scottish government and US Presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Trump filed the law suit stating that the wind farm construction will have an impact on his golf course and that the Scottish government was biased. The case was dismissed due to lack of evidence to support his allegations.

Earlier this month, Vattenfall had announced its final investment decision for the SEK3bn ($346m) project which will have 11 turbines.

Apart from generating electricity, Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm will be used for testing and developing new technologies for offshore wind power.
