Irish gas transmission operator Bord Gais Networks said that it has connected the town of Ballina in Ireland to its national natural gas network.
According to the company, Ballina is the third town to be connected to the natural gas network after Westport and Castlebar as the next major load in the region.
The construction program for Ballina saw the completion of 14kms of distribution main within the town and the 19km of feeder main, which ties in to the 149km Mayo-Galway Pipeline.
The company said that, the pipeline connects to the 12,821km national gas network at Galway. The completion of the feeder main also facilitated the connection of Crossmolina.
The Gaswest Project is a E40 million, three-year development project for the West of Ireland. Following the completion of the first two phases of the New Towns Analysis report undertaken by Bord Gais, the towns of Ballina, Ballinrobe, Ballyhaunis, Castlebar, Claremorris, Crossmolina, Knock and Westport in County Mayo were proposed for connection, subject to securing sufficient loads within each town. Work is continuing to serve the remaining towns.
