Renewables

Mexico can generate up to 2000 MWe from renewable resources, according to Energy Minister Luis Téllez. He said Mexico had great potential for power from sun, wind and volcanic activity

Solar projects are small-scale and aim to serve Mexico’s isolated communities. Of 90 000 communities of less than 100 people in Mexico, only 8 per cent have electricity. Seven hybrid solar/wind systems of 10-200 kWe have been installed.

The Electricity Research Institute said: "Mexico is the world’s third-largest geothermal energy generator, but could be first. Mexico has 14 live volcanoes pumping out huge amounts of energy in the form of hot water and steam. There are many areas capable of geothermal development."
