Swiss energy firm BKW FMB Energy has restarted the Muhleberg nuclear power plant in Switzerland following the completion of the facility's scheduled annual revision.

The work took over four weeks to complete and included inspections performed by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate. In addition, BKW carried out important renovation and maintenance work and subjected the plant’s safety systems to the usual controls. The Muhleberg nuclear power plant (KKM) is now equipped for continued long-term operation from both an operational and a safety point of view.

A total of 1,000 specialists were involved in the revision, including 300 BKW staff and 700 external experts from the region, elsewhere in Switzerland and abroad. The firm said that preventive maintenance work and an ongoing modernization program will ensure the long-term operation of the KKM. The KKM covers some 40% of the total electricity requirement in the area in north western Switzerland that is supplied by BKW.
