Biofuels are offered only at a few petrol filling stations in Bulgaria due to limited production and lack of quality standards, according to the Dnevnik daily.

The newspaper reported that local firm Petrol and Russian firm Lukoil are the only two retailers offering biofuels at their stations.

The retailer Petrol reportedly offers biodiesel at 42 of its Bulgarian pump locations while Lukoil sells 5% blended diesel at three outlets in the city of Burgas.

Other major players such as Shell, OMV and Eko Elda reportedly do not offer biofuels due to the lack of quality certification of such fuels in Bulgaria.

Bulgarian biofuel regulation requires retailers to blend fuels such as petrol and diesel with 5% biofuel in a bid to reduce fossil fuel usage, according to the Dnevnik.
