Following recent Brussels governmental approval for the production of bio-diesel from crops, Total has become the first fuel retailer to add the greener option to its Belgian forecourt mix, Petrol Plaza has reported.

The Belgian government has only just given its consent for diesel products to be developed from agricultural sources, meaning that bio-diesel has been absent from the Belgian fuel market until now.

Stealing a march on its rivals, Total has secured itself the position of Belgian market pioneer by becoming the first of offer the new fuel, produced and supplied by Oleon, on Belgium’s forecourts.

According to Petrol Plaza, Total anticipates a progressive increase of bio-diesel sales in Belgium, from 3.37% of the market in 2006 to 4.29% in 2007 and at least the 5.75% requested by the EU by 2010.
