International consulting engineering firm, Binnie black-veatch, has won a £1M (US$1.6M) design contract for a multipurpose water resources project in Phuoc Hoa, Vietnam. The customer is the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The consultant team will complete all existing studies and prepare detailed designs for four dams and an 8.5km diversion channel, plus 40km of canals and associated irrigation works. The project is expected to last for 18 months and was set to begin on 1 March 1999.

Particular areas of expertise that Binnie Black & Veatch will cover include resettlement studies, agricultural and development studies, economic and financial appraisals and full environmental impact assessments.

The project aims are to: •Irrigate 18,000ha of land north of Ho Chi Minh City.

•Supply Vietnam’s national grid with 5MW of hydro power.

•Augment raw water supplies for industrial and domestic use.

•Reduce salinity intrusion.
