The Indian National Thermal Power Corp (NTPC) is seeking international competitive bids for LNG contacts to supply five LNG-based power projects the company wants to develop at Anta, Auraiya, Kawas, Gandhar and Kayamkukam. The five projects have an aggregate capacity of 4500 MW.

NTPC initially developed plans for the projects with LNG sourced from Petronet. Petronet was to be a joint venture involving IOC, EPCL, ONGC and GAIL as well as NTPC but the latter demanded LNG at concessional rates for its plants. When it found its partners unwilling to accede, it withdrew its stake and shelved the plans for the power plants.

The company is now seeking long term LNG contracts at a price that will make the power from the projected plants cheap enough to sell in India.
