Though it initially received approval for a waste recovery and combined heat and power plant, the company filed a revised application in May 2013 with a view to make the site viable.

The plant named, ‘WandE’, which will have a capacity to process 300,000 tonne per year waste, will attain a landfill diversion rate of around 90% and recover materials for recycling.

The plant will generate 19MW of electricity by process mixed municipal, commercial and industrial wastes using the gasification technology.

While approving the project, the council’s planning committee agreed to impose several conditions including recording quarterly readings from the chimney, a traffic plan for which routes need to be used for deliveries as over 80 trucks are estimated to roll each day.
