Under the deal, the company will buy 3.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG over a 20-year period from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG terminal, located in the US state of Louisiana.
The move will allow BG Group to secure LNG volumes for export from the US to international gas markets, with LNG exports expected to begin as early as 2015.
Construction of the liquefaction facilities at Sabine Pass is expected to start in 2012, and the initial phase will consist of two trains capable of producing 9mtpa of LNG.
