Construction work on South Africa’s Berg river dam has been awarded to a consortium of four companies collaborating as the Berg River Project Joint Venture.

The US$85M contract was awarded this week to Grinaker-LTA, Group Five, Wilson Bayley Holmes Ovcon and Western Cape Empowerment Contractors, according to local news reports.

The deal was awarded by the Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), which was ordered in 2002 to implement the US$217M Berg Water project with the aim of increasing water reserves in the Western Cape by 18%.

With funding from TCTA, the consortium is to begin work next month and the project is expected to begin delivering water by the year 2007.
