The company said that 64 of the 157 fuel assemblies will be replaced and numerous safety inspections will be conducted during this off line phase.
Additionally, preventative maintenance to ensure continued safe and reliable operations will be performed on large pumps providing water to the reactor and the main electrical generator.
Some 1,000 temporary contractors and FENOC employees from the company’s other nuclear plants will supplement the Beaver Valley workforce during the outage.
The unit operated safely for 465 consecutive days and generated more than 10 million megawatt hours of electricity since the completion of its last refueling in November 2009, according to the company.
