The company projects that the output will touch 4.5 million tons following the acquisition of its stake in the Nullagine Iron Ore Joint Venture (NJV).

BC’s acquisition increased its stake in the venture to 75%, thereby increasing its capacity.

The current stake holding increases NJV infrastructure capacity to a production rate of 6 million tons per annum for the life of the joint venture.

"Fortescue and BC Iron will continue to explore other joint opportunities in the East Pilbara region with a view to further expanding on this strong joint venture relationship," the company said in a statement.

As on 31 December 2012, NJV hosted mineral ore reserves of 39.9 million tons at 57.1% Fe.

The miner had previously held a 50% interest in the Nullagine project, located in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia, alongside Fortescue Metals Group.

BC produced 1.09 million tons of iron ore for the fourth quarter of the 2012 fiscal at an operating cost of $51 per ton.

The figures reveal a 0.1% decline in production from the earlier quarter of the same fiscal year.
