Canada’s BC Hydro has released its 1997 report on the environment. The report focuses on BC Hydro’s efforts to avoid, minimize or mitigate the environmental effects of its operations. This is the sixth year the company has produced such a report.

The 1997 edition profiles the company’s environmental initiatives, performance and priorities. It also outlines some of their consultation and community involvement activities during the 1996/97 fiscal year.

Information about BC Hydro’s Environmental Management System, operational reviews of several facilities throughout the province, and environmental training and recreation programme audits are included in the document.

Some of the company’s key priorities during the past year included fish and wildlife management initiatives such as the ongoing efforts of two compensation programmes: the Peance Williston Compensation Programme and the Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Compensation Programme. Energy management programmes such as Power Smart and Resource Smart also helped conserve electricity and were successful in improving BC Hydro’s generation efficiency and capacity without building new projects.
