The company noted that the laboratory will focus on researching electrolytes and electrode materials for high-performance batteries, as part of its global R&D network.
BASF Battery Research and Electrochemistry vice president Andreas Fischer said that the new Amagasaki Battery Materials Lab will allow the company to expand its R&D network as well as the industry in Japan.
"Our aim is to develop innovative materials for high-performance batteries that will significantly improve battery performance for electric cars and consumer applications," added Fischer.
The Application Technology Center will enhance service and develop tailor-made solutions for the battery industry in the country.
Both the facilities are scheduled to be completely operational by the end of 2013.
