At the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) 21st Congress, it was announced that Barcelona, Spain, will play host to the 22nd International Congress on Large Dams in 2006.

The Spanish National Committee on Large Dams (SPANCOLD) has invited all icold delegates and dam experts to attend and actively participate at the event.

Spain has a long tradition in the construction of large dams – with 1200 large dams in operation and a further 25 under construction. Due to the high irregulatory of the rivers, many large dams have had to be constructed in order to advance in water management processes, taking into account environmental aspects and European Union laws.
