The approval was given amid various contradictions, including that the GTCL is not a party to the PSC. Earlier Petrobangla chairman, M Muktadir Ali has terminated a tender by GTCL for the compressor as he wanted to award the contract to Chevron. He has been pursuing Chevron to install the compressor station at Muchai on GTCL’s pipeline.
Energy Secretary Mohammad Mohsin said hat since the tender was canceled, a re-tender will take at least another two years time. But as Chevron’s compressor can be installed within 18 to 20 months, it will be helpful to enhance gas pressure quickly.
By 2010, GTCL will be able to invite tenders for two other compressors under financing from Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Chevron will be awarded the contract within one month, Mohsin said. The $52.7 million investment for this compressor will be recovered from the Chevron-operated gas fields in Block 12.
