Both global and local companies are entitled to participate.
An official stated that coal might be imported from Indonesia, India or Australia. The Bangladesh administration has pledged to increase power production from the present 5,000 MW to 7,000 MW by 2014.
Bangladesh contains five coal fields with nearly 2.55 billion tons of reserves yet cannot extract them till a national coal rule has been established.
Officials stated that nearly 80% of Bangladesh’s power comes from natural gas. However the country with 13.54 trillion cubic feet of recoverable and proven gas reserves is experiencing up to 250 million cubic feet of gas deficits per day.
The nation is currently witnessing up to 2,000 MW of power deficit per day.
Experts have pushed the administration to expedite a coal mining regulation, without which coal extraction is not feasible.
Aminul Haque, a professor employed at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, said “We cannot afford to sit idle on huge coal reserves of our own due to only lack of a decision about the ways of extraction.”
