A consortium comprising Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Powertek will work with the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) to finance and build the coal-fired power plant in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, on a 50:50 equity basis.

Scheduled to be constructed on built, own and operate (BOO) basis, the coal-fired plant construction will be completed by 2019.

Bangladesh and Malaysia will finance 30% or 20% of total project cost of the project whereas the remaining costs will be borne through loans secured from other sources.

Two 660MW ultra super critical coal-based power plants will be built under the project, reports Prothom Alo.

The agreement is valid for two years except extended by mutual agreement or when the firms sign a definitive joint venture (JV) agreement/shareholder agreement for the project development, reports Bernama.

Following completion of feasibility study, the parties will form a JV company and will float international tender for the engineering procurement and commission (EPC) contractor for the project.

BPDB would provide the land for the project while TNB-Powertek consortium will provide technical leadership and coordinate the feasibility study of the project.
