Malaysia's energy, communications and multimedia minister, Datuk Amar Leo Moggie, has said that the bidders for the civil engineering package of the Bakun hydro power project were expected to submit their documents by April 2002, and that the outcome of the tender was expected to be known in July or August.

Moggie had said in 2001, when announcing the revival of the Bakun dam, that local companies would get the job for the main dam construction package while the other two packages – mechanical engineering and power transmission – would involve foreign expertise.

The construction cost of the rockfill dam is estimated at between US$1.3B and US$1.6B, the project’s overall development has been estimated to cost between US$2.1B and US$2.4B.
