Solar project developer Avenir Solar Energy Chile is gearing up to develop a 196MW solar project in Atacama in the country with an investment of $450m.

The construction of El Romero Solar, which is expected to commence in October 2013, estimates to produce annual power of 482GWh.

The National Energy Commission and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) have extended their support for the project planned in the town of Domeyko, Huasco Province in the Atacama Region.

With transmission lines and existing substations and centers of energy demand within reasonable range, the location is ruled as ideal for the project.

Chilean government, meanwhile, is seeking an expansion in the solar energy sector with the Chilean Environmental Evaluation Service (SEA) approving solar projects totaling capacity of 764MW. Additional, 649MW of applications were submitted to SEA earlier in May 2013.
