About one fourth of the EU policymakers are against the UK’s deal to pay a guaranteed price of £92.50 for every megawatt hour to EDF and its partners for 35 years once the reactors go live. This guaranteed price is almost twice the current wholesale power price, reports Reuters.
The EU members are expected to vote on the issue on Wednesday.
The project will be constructed by French firm EDF at Hinkley Point. The nuclear plant will allow UK to cut down its dependecy on coal-fired plants.
In a letter to the European Commission’s president Jose Manuel Barroso, Austrian chancellor Werner Faymann and vice-chancellor Reinhold Mitterlehner stated that Austria would take legal action if the project receives approval from the Brussels.
Faymann said: "Should the EU Commission undertake this step, then it must expect a lawsuit at the highest court. Alternative forms of energy are worthy of subsidies, not nuclear energy."
