“We are safeguarding our Renewable Energy Target legislation, so it can come into effect even if the Liberal party continues to block the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme,” Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said.
Opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull welcomed the decision as “a victory for common sense.”
The carbon trading scheme will be presented by the government again ahead of a United Nations meeting on climate change in Copenhagen in December 2009.
