The IoT technology can be deployed rapidly to help cities manage water and avoid leaks on water pipeline.
Water pressure, temperature and leaks can be detected with the help of the solution, which uses Echologics sensors and sound technology from Mueller Water and AT&T’s LTE wireless network.
All sources of water information will be bought together with the help of the IBM Water Management Center, giving a complete picture of past, present and future performance.
The product retrofits existing water pipes with acoustic sensors that can identify leaks. The information will then be sent to the cloud over AT&T’s wireless network, and uploaded into IBM software, alerting the managers in case of a leak detection.
AT&T Industrial IoT Solutions vice president Mike Troiano said: "A typical water pipe leak wastes almost 400,000 gallons of water per year.
"Cities are facing water shortages all over the world and need help identifying issues early to help avoid a catastrophic event. We’re giving communities more visibility into their water supply, and helping them better manage the future operation of their water systems."
According to researchers, 2.1 trillion gallons of purified drinking water are lost every year in the US due to leaky pipes and broken water mains.
