Swedish industrial company Atlas Copco has been awarded a contract to provide energy-efficient liquid natural gas technology in partnership with marine specialist Hamworthy Gas Systems.

Atlas Copco said that South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering have ordered the next-generation systems for the reliquefaction of liquid natural gas (LNG) onboard seven vessels.

In total, 14 nitrogen Atlas Copco companders (a three-stage nitrogen compressor coupled with an expansion turbine) and 14 boil-off-gas compressors will be delivered during 2008. Atlas Copco said that the machinery will help to significantly reduce power consumption compared to previously supplied systems.

According to Atlas Copco, its share in the contract is more than SEK210 million, making it one of the largest ever orders for the company’s gas and process division.

This latest order is evidence of the demand for energy-efficient products from our customers, said Ronnie Leten, business area president for Atlas Copco compressor technique. Our LNG experience and expertise working together with Hamworthy’s innovative reliquefaction technology is continuing to prove a powerful combination in this growth market.
