Upon completion of the project, the 500kV direct current line, including associated converter stations and facilities will be extended from the Gibbons area northeast of Edmonton to an area near Brooks in southeast Alberta.
The new power transmission line will strengthen the reliability, boost the capacity, improve the efficiency of the Alberta grid, and help to meet the increasing demand for electricity in the province.
It will also add additional capacity to the existing electricity transmission system in Alberta.
Prior to developing the application, the company had carried out a public engagement process which included information campaigns, open houses and individual meetings with landowners.
ATCO Electric president Sett Policicchio said the approval is outcome of three years of hard work and consultation shows the input the company received through the process.
"We look forward to continuing to work together with these landowners and the communities of eastern Alberta as we begin to build this critically important piece of infrastructure for Alberta," Policicchio said.
